Old TN 53 Bridge over Sugar Creek (Jackson County)

I found this bridge by the simple act of making a wrong turn while exploring the confusing road network of the Middle Tennessee Highland Rim. This bridge is on an old alignment of TN 53 and has obviously been abandoned quite awhile. The typical 1950's concrete highway bridge is severely deteriorated, which of course means that it makes for fine abandoned road photography. All photos below taken March 13, 2005.

Old TN 53 bridge looking southbound. Looking across the bridge, you see the road is overtaken by vegitation. You can also see the now worthless barracade blocking traffic from crossing the bridge. A pothole seen in a photo below is on the left side.
Old TN 53 bridge in a side angled view. This is a further back side angle view of the whole structure and abandoned road.
Close-up of the deterioration under the railing. This side view shows detail of the bridge including heavy deterioration of the bridge railing, which will eventually cause it to collapse off the side of the bridge.
Hole in bridge deck. Watch where you step. A huge hole exists in the middle of the bridge deck on the northbound side of the bridge.
