Old Vonore Bridge over Tellico Lake (Monroe County)
Few times in your life will you ever encounter something as strange and creepy as this: the remains of an old highway bridge rising out of the lake like a monster only to drop off past a point. This stub of the lost U.S. 411 bridge over the Little Tennessee River was partially demolished and abandoned in the early 1970's prior to the completion of Tellico Lake. The modern bridge may be seen in a couple photos. This stub does serve a purpose, however, as the county has built a connection to the bridge from land so that it now serves as a unique fishing pier. Photos taken April 2004.
This super creepy remnant can be seen here slipping into the waters of Lake Tellico with a gate blocking potential traffic from crossing the removed truss. Speed boat traffic or what?
Climbing Loudon Bridge northbound, you see clearly that the roadway is extremely narrow. Guardrails were attached to the railing to make the concrete rails less likely to give way if hit.
This unfortunately crooked shot shows detail of the trusses, which numbered five or six. Note the latticed railing behind the guardrail, which was typical TDOT standard on trusses of that day.
Further along driving north across the truss section.
Touching back down on the northern portal of the bridge.
Looking on the south portal between quaint old and ugly new. Here you see some detail of the piers and girters.
Side detail of all the trusses from the new bridge.
